Isn't Mexico like really dangerous?

Since I moved back to the Motherland the million-dollar question has been “Isn’t Mexico like really dangerous?” or “How safe is it over there?” Both of the questions refer to the same thing; the drugs and violence we see on the news. While I was still living in the US and I would tell someone I was moving back to Mexico they would get really shocked and proceed to ask me if I was sure about it. Obviously, I was sure, if I wasn’t why would I be sharing that information with you.

I always regretted telling someone who was a “know it all” about Mexico. I would tell them and they would proceed to inform me that their uncle told them about a cousin who had a friend who had an ex-girlfriend that moved back and was kidnapped and killed. Might be an exaggerated example, but that is usually how my conversations went. There was a lot of so and so said this and so and so said that, but none of the things they would tell me were really said with facts. To this day living here I’ve had friends tell me “oh but don’t go there because its dangerous there”

Them: girl they steal there…

Me: … oh, okay not like I live here or anything.

Most “facts” people have about Mexico are from people that lived here 15+ years ago or from the news, which exaggerates EVERYTHING. Living here I have found that YES there is crime *super shocked face* but it’s crime that you see anywhere you live. There are thefts that happen, just like in the US. There are frauds that happen, just like in the US. There are drugs and gangs, just like in the US. There are shootings, just like in the US, but you know the difference between a shooting here in Mexico and a shooting in the US? Kids don’t get shot at.

Yes, there are some young girls and women who get kidnapped and forced to do horrible things, but when you hear about a shooting it usually happens between one gang/cartel and another gang/cartel.

We've had very few school shooting in last FIFTEEN years, nothing compared to US school shootings. We don’t have shootings at Walmart, or Garlic festivals, and we sure as hell don’t have them within a 24-hour period.

I spoke with a family member that lives in the US and they told me they were at Walmart earlier that day, and while being there they were scared. There is absolutely no reason for someone to fear going to a damn Walmart, yet here we are. You have kids scared to go to school, you have parents who have to have a conversation with their young sons on how to WALK in the streets and how to act around folks who aren’t POC. No parent should have to tell their TEN year old son to be careful when they see a cop, to not have their hands in their pockets, and to absolutely never wear a hoodie because it makes you look “suspicious”.

It honestly saddens me to see all the hatred that is being demonstrated in “the land of the free”

Next time I get asked about my safety in Mexico I’ll make sure to ask about their safety because from where I stand, living in Mexico is safer than living in the US.
